Christmas Crapt— Crapped Out.

Posted in Podcasts by akibaren on 2009/12/26

So, we gathered for our annual Christmas Craptacular to watch some ridiculous Japanese Cartoons and record a podcast episode but we were defeated. What we had collected just wasn’t crappy enough. And Akihabara Renditions refuses to deliver a subpar product. So, we’re taking a few weeks to scour our libraries deeper, dive further into the Internet and really find some polished shit for us to watch, cry and then scream into a mixer about. Don’t worry, there will be a Craptacular for this year, it just won’t be released until next year.

Episode 28 is nearly complete and will be up shortly and we are working hard on hammering out our 2010 schedule. We hope everyone has a happy holiday season and new year!

Episode 27 – Podcast Robo: The Night the Internet Stood Still

Posted in Podcasts by akibaren on 2009/12/07

We’re back with another fantastic episode. This episode, we discuss the epic 1990s OAV Giant Robo The Animation: The Night the Earth Stood Still. Just listen to the podcast and then watch this show. Or, watch the show and listen to the podcast. Either way, you win because you’ve watched Giant Robo.

Hosts:

“Suharashiki” no Drew Sutton, “Shougeki” no Richard Hoelsher, “Shikou” no Marc Smaik and “Shizukanaru” Taylor Hall.

Episode 26 – The Pilgrimage

Posted in Podcasts by akibaren on 2009/12/07

After Drew went to Japan (and returned), the crew went to Anime Weekend Atlanta (and returned), Marc and Drew began promoting Seishun Con while Richard went to Japan (and later returned), we’ve still managed to get some podcasts together. Please accept our apologies for the delays. With that said, episode 26 features a do-over for Richard and Drew as they review again the Fist of the North Star movie from 1986 and then tackle the 2008-2009 OAV film Hokuto no Ken: Kenshiro-den. This time, we’ve managed to escape Soviet Russia and the clutches of KGB major/Prime Minister/man-about-town, Czar Putin.

Episode 25 – A Whimsical Orange Road

Posted in Podcasts, Site News by akibaren on 2009/09/17

Just before Anime Weekend Atlanta, we celebrate our twenty-fifth episode (and it only took 30 months to do!) by changing things up a little bit. Here at Akihabara Renditions, we do our reviews a little differently – we all are subjected to the material to be reviewed and each give our opinions on it. I think it makes for a much more balanced review but there are still some kinks to be worked out in the execution. While much of our review material thus far has been OAVs and films which only take a few hours to watch, when it comes to some of the longer series, four busy-as-Japanese-beavers-individuals with a ton of other commitments outside of the podcast, it becomes a little infeasible to adhere to this method.

So, we’ve modified the method a bit with one of us helming the flagship of running the review and selecting a few episodes for the rest of the members to get a feel for the series. Our first attempt at this new review style is 1987’s Kimagure Orange Road. We return to our normal review pattern with a forgettable OAV from 1986, Cosmos Pink Shock.

Akihabara Renditions: Japanese Animation of the Bubble Economy, Atlanta’s own and the “Best Podcast You’ve Never Heard Of” present the following events for your consumption -

Friday:
30th Anniversary Gundam Fan Panel, 9 – 11 PM, Galleria Room 105.
Drew and Richard of the Akihabara Renditions Podcast have some clips and witty commentary as we talk about one of the most prolific franchises in all of modern anime. We’re going to expand a little bit on our panel from last year, The Gundam Primer. If you like Gundam, come to this panel. If you ever wondered what /m/ looks like without computers, COME TO THIS PANEL. If you cannot get enough of Bright Noah with a chicken on his head, COME. TO. THIS. PANEL.

Saturday:
Classic Mecha, 2 – 3 PM, Galleria 105.
Dave Merrill and Drew Sutton dig out some old Japanese robot cartoons. Dave will mostly cover the 70s giant robot stuff and I’ll be hitting up the 80s with real robot stuff. Expect a lot of mainstays but knowing Dave, he’s got some wild gems I’ve probably never seen or heard of. If we run really short on time, expect Bright Noah with a chicken on his head.

Anime Podcasters Roundtable, 6:30 – 7:30 PM, Kennesaw Ballroom.
I will be joined by Basil from the OSMcast! and Internet Celebrity Daryl Surat Gerald &/or Clarissa from Anime World Order and how ever many of our co-hosts that can fit on the panel to talk about podcasting, why we never update (because we’re too busy with panels) and what it takes to run an anime podcast (hint: more than you think). And probably some other topics as they arise.

In addition, the whole Akihabara Renditions crew will be out in force ready to get your impressions of the convention!

Episode 24 – Japanese Cartoons, Spring 2009

Posted in Podcasts by akibaren on 2009/07/19

Basil from the OSMcast, our podcast superfriends, sticks around with us for another part where crotchety old men talk about the new-fangled cartoons from Spirng 2009 this year. This episode would have been much, much better had it been released near-after it was recorded as we only look at the series as the first couple of episodes were available and is more of an ‘initial thoughts’ sort of discussion. If you think we hate all new cartoons, this episode may surprise you! I know it surprised me.

Hosts: Drew Sutton, Richard Hoelsher, Marc Smazik and Basil

Episode 23 – Fear and Loathing in Nashville

Posted in Podcasts by akibaren on 2009/07/19

Welcome back, friends. In this episode, our good friend Basil from the OSMcast! winds up in Atlanta and helps us along with our MTAC review – right on schedule as the convention was three months ago and the additional four to six weeks of S/H between review and posting. Releasing on schedule just isn’t how we roll. :P

Hosts: Drew Sutton, Richard Hoelsher, Marc Smazik and Basil.

Episode 22 – A Half-tastic MomoCon Review

Posted in Podcasts by akibaren on 2009/05/15

A magnificent podcast as Marc and Drew sit down and discuss MomoCon for what they thought would be a brief discussion.

Marc sets a dangerous precedent by offering a party for listeners once a single episode’s downloads surpass the number of fingers on a normal individual’s fingers on two hands!

So, order your drinks by downloading this podcast!

Hosts: Marc Smazik and Drew Sutton

Podcast Notes:

MomoCon really deserves to be plugged. Also, Drew is prepared to take comments on numerous rounds of potential libel and slander.

Episode 21 – A Podcast Abortion

Posted in Podcasts by akibaren on 2009/05/09

Episode 21 is finally ready (or not) to go! In this episode, we find out how much Drew loves the 1980s as we review Megazone 23 PART 1 and Project A-ko. I don’t think his co-hosts will ever forgive him.

Drew picked a fine time to get concerned over quality. At least, what he has control over and that’s what has taken so long for this to get posted. Episodes 22, 23 and 24 are already recorded and won’t be experiencing the same delay, so please stay tuned as they will be coming out shortly and we’ll be caught up to speed yet again.

Hosts: Drew Sutton, Marc Smazik, Jason Brown and Richard Hoelsher.

Podcast Omake 1 – OSMCast_Renditions Tokusatsu Three Way

Posted in Podcasts by akibaren on 2009/05/01

This is not a normal episode by any length because we talk about a con AT A CON and are Richard and Drew areĀ  GUESTS on OUR OWN show. Plus – to get even more trippy, this is actually the SECOND piece of bonus material recorded at the convention for Akihabara Renditions. We introduce (not really) a guest and friend of ours, Jason Sohiel Asgari of gaijINside.com in an earlier bonus track and we’ll post that later. Now for the episode you care about (not really)!

Download the episode here!

Special thanks go out to Basil and Kevin of OSMcast, first for Basil for hosting and then Kevin for filling in mid way through and to Jason Sohiel Asgari for joining us to talk about conventions and men in rubber suits.

Podcast Notes:

None of us can count conventions who use “non-sequential” numbering schemes, also known as “themes”. We spend the first part talking about the actual convention in a real-time fashion (unlike a real review, which we sit on for three weeks and then not post it for another month). Then, Basil has to leave and his compadre Kevin fills in to help Richard and Jason school Drew on the magical fairy land that is Japanese special effects hero programming, more shortly known as tokusatsu.
